News / Treasury Committee: Greensill
It’s been a
busy month in Parliament, particularly with a number of high profile meetings
of the Treasury Select Committee and our inquiry into "Lessons from Greensill Capital".
Over the course of the month we have
questioned the Chancellor Rishi Sunak, the Permanent Secretary and Second Permanent Secretary at HM Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority,
Lex Greensill and even David Cameron himself. I am particularly concerned at the potential cost to the
taxpayer of the collapse of Greensill Capital and the scale of the lobbying across Whitehall by WhatsApp of a former Prime Minister.
As David
Cameron himself said on lobbying: “It's the next big scandal waiting to
happen. It's an issue that frankly crosses party lines and has tainted our
politics for too long. It's an issue that exposes the far too cosy relationship
between politics, government, business and money. I'm talking about lobbying
and we all know how it works. The lunches, the hospitality, the quiet word in
your ear, the ex-ministers and ex-advisers for hire, helping big business find
the right way to get its way.”
How right he
was.
