Siobhain speaks out after Ahmadi murder

Home / News & Views / News / Siobhain speaks out after Ahmadi murder

08 April 2016

home office letter It is two weeks since the killing of popular shopkeeper Asad Shah in Scotland left the country in shock.

The 40-year-old was brutally stabbed at his store on Minard Road on the South side of Glasgow, which sparked an outpouring of grief from locals for a man they described as a true gentleman with a heart of gold.

Mr Shah was murdered by an extremist, who disagreed with his Ahmadi Muslim faith. During the police investigation officers claimed the incident was "religiously prejudiced". Mr Shah was an Ahmadiyya Muslim, a group known for its non-violence and interfaith concerns. Ahmadiyya are banned by the constitution of Pakistan from referring to themselves as Muslims.

While the Ahmadi community has faced severe persecution and violence in other countries, most notably Pakistan, we are extremely shocked that this brutal murder has happened on UK soil. This is the first religiously motivated murder of an Ahmadi Muslim in the UK, and it's part of a worrying trend.

Siobhain has written to the Home Secretary to request a meeting to discuss this brutal murder, and decide how to stop violence against Ahmadi Muslims in the UK.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community has been seeing the signs of increasing extremism in the UK and have
been alerting Government and the authorities of their concerns for 30 years. What this murder shows that the Government needs to do more so that extremism is not allowed to take root and result in such barbaric killings.
