News / Siobhain challenges Government on Buy-to-Let landlords
In a debate on the Chancellor's Budget proposals, Siobhain urged the Government to curb the privileges enjoyed by Buy-to-Let landlords. Over recent decades, more and more homes in London have been purchased as investments rather than homes, pricing ordinary Londoners out of the market and making it harder for people in Mitcham and Morden to buy their own home.
Landlords are given £6 billion of tax relief on their mortgage interest, but people paying off the mortgage on their own home are not afforded such a privilege. By curbing these tax breaks, the Government could raise enough to build 100,000 social homes.
