Campaign against the Mayor's police cuts

Home / News & Views / News / Campaign against the Mayor's police cuts

12 February 2014

Transport Police Merton has lost around 80 police officers since 2010 - 20.1 Sergeants, 25.6 PCs and 33.9 PCSOs. Also, every police base in Mitcham and Morden for Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) is being closed, meaning those officers who are left have further to travel to get to their beat.

The definition of Safer Neighbourhood policing is also changing - previously, each SNT had 6 officers and they could only work in one neighbourhood, but now most of them must work all over the Borough instead of building a relationship with an individual neighbourhood.

According to the Evening Standard since the General Election the Metropolitan Police has lost more than 3,000 officers and half its PCSOs.

Siobhain is worried about the impact of all of these developments on the safety of communities like Mitcham and Morden.

All decisions about the Metropolitan Police are ultimately the responsibility of the Mayor of London, and Siobhain has written to him to express her concerns.
